Bill Duo rallied for a come-from-behind three-set win to lift William & Mary to a key Colonial Athletic Association victory at Elon, 4-2, on Saturday afternoon.
The Tribe (7-9, 3-1 CAA) captured the doubles point before senior
George Davis and graduate student
Joseph Brailovsky won at the top two singles positions. Duo's three-set rally put the finishing touches on the Tribe victory over the Phoenix (11-7, 3-1 CAA).
How It Happened
- The Tribe took the a closely-contested doubles point with wins at No. 1 and No. 3. All three matches were decided by 6-4 scorelines. Duo and Davis gave the Tribe the lead topping Daniel Martin and Nicholas Campbell at No. 1. The Tribe pair improved to 10-6 overall and 5-4 on line one.
- The graduate student tandem of
Daniel Pellerito and
Andres Silva clinched the doubles point, giving W&M a 1-0 lead thanks to a victory over Nicholas Condos and Ben Zipay at No. 3. It was their first win as a pair this season.
- After a pair of Elon singles wins, Brailovsky and Davis put the Tribe back in front with straight-sets wins at the top two positions.
- At No. 2, Brailovsky took the opening set from Campbell, before rolling in the second, 6-1. Brailovsky won his second straight and pushed his team-leading singles mark to 18-11 with seven wins coming at No. 2.
- Davis improved to 3-0 in CAA play and gave the Tribe a 3-2 advantage thanks to a win at No. 1. He topped Daniel Martin, 7-6 (10), 6-2, for his seventh win of the year and sixth at the top spot.
- The balance of the match came down to three-set tilts at No. 4 and No. 5 where sophomore
Sean Joseph and Duo rallied from set deficit to take it to decisive thirds.
- Duo rallied to clinch the Tribe's victory behind a win at No. 5. After dropping the first set to Oskar Antinheimo, 6-4, the W&M grad student answered with matching 6-2 wins in the second and third set to give the Green and Gold the victory. Duo won his eighth match of the season and improved to 3-1 in CAA play.
- Joseph won the second set from Condos, 7-5, at No. 4 and led 3-0 in the third when his match was abandoned with the team results already decided.
Up Next
The Tribe returns to action when it hosts Navy at the Mackesy Tennis Center, weather permitting, on Sunday at 2 p.m. The match will serve as Senior Day as W&M will honor Davis, Brailovsky, Pellerito and Silva prior to the match. Fans are encouraged to arrive early for the 1:30 p.m. celebration.
