Strong Singles Propels Tribe Past ECU

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – William & Mary women's tennis used its singles strength, winning five of six matches to down East Carolina, 5-2, for its fourth-straight victory on Saturday afternoon at the McCormack-Nagelsen Tennis Center.
 
Sophomores Hedda Gurholt, Emma Fernald and Ine Stange, graduate student Sofiya Kuzina and freshman Emma Pell each notched singles victories in the Tribe (10-4) win.
 
How It Happened
- East Carolina (8-8) opened the match by taking the doubles point with wins at the top two positions.
- Gurholt and Pell gave W&M the early lead in doubles with a victory on line three. The duo topped Anne Lou Champion and Kim Auerswald, 6-2, to improve to 4-2 on the year.
- Kuzina wasted little time pulling the Tribe even with a win at No. 3 singles. She dropped just two games in a 6-1, 6-1, victory over Isabella Rivera Ortiz. Kuzina notched her 13th singles win on the year, improving to 6-3 at No. 3.
- Fernald and Gurholt extended the Tribe lead to 3-1 with straight-sets singles wins. At No. 4, Fernald won her third in a row, topping Alisha Hussain to improve to 14-8 on the year. Gurholt notched her fourth consecutive victory with matching 6-2 sets over Ines Bachir. She ran her season ledger to 15-7 overall and an impressive 10-3 at No. 1.
- Pell clinched the Tribe victory, winning in straight-sets on line six. She upended Champion, 6-3, 6-4, to run her dual-match record to 9-3.
- At No. 5, Stange won her fifth in a row, downing Joan Madi, 6-2, 6-4. It was her 10th singles win of the year as she improved to 6-1 in dual-match play.
 
Up Next
The Tribe returns to action on Saturday, April 1, when it hosts CAA foe UNCW at the Mackesey Tennis Center at 10 a.m.
