Early Offense Lifts Tribe Over George Mason

WILLIAMSBURG, VA. - William & Mary scored four in the first and seven in the second on the way to a wild 16-10 win at George Mason Tuesday afternoon. The Green and Gold added two in the third, two in the sixth, and another run in the eighth.

Eight of the Tribe's starting nine recorded hits in the game and eight of the nine scored at least one run. Five William & Mary players knocked in multiple runs, led by four from Nate Goranson. Tank Yaghoubi scored a team-high four runs, while Ben Williamson and Lucas Carmichael each had two hits and combined for five runs scored.

Owen Pierce picked up the win for the Tribe. Nick Lottchea allowed just one run over his 3.0 innings pitched and Brian Craven tossed a scoreless ninth to secure the win. The victory ensured a season sweep of George Mason and the Tribe's 10th straight win over the Patriots.

Williamson got the Tribe on the board just two batters into the game. Carmichael was hit by a pitch to begin the game and scored on Williamson's triple to deep right center. Williamson would score on a sac fly off the bat of Nate Goranson to make it 2-0 Tribe in the first.

The Tribe would rally with two outs in the first to plate two more runs. Tank Yaghoubi took a pitch off the arm and moved to third on a Corey Adams single. Both runners scored on Smith's two-out single up the middle.

The lead would be short lived as George Mason roared back to tie the game in the bottom half of the first. Mason scored four runs on three hits, highlighted by a James Quinn-Irons three-run homer.

William & Mary took the lead back in the second as Carmichael and Williamson would lead off with a pair of singles and score on a bases loaded Goranson double to right. Joe Delossantos would score on an error from the George Mason second baseman before Goranson scored on a fielder's choice. Cole Ragone would bring in Yaghoubi with a double off the base of the wall in center and Carmichael would plate two more with a double to left to make it 11-4.

George Mason would answer with one run on one hit in the second. Goranson would knock in his fourth runner of the game on a fielder's choice in the third and Yaghoubi would follow with a sac fly to score Delossantos making it 13-5.

The team's exchanged four scoreless half innings before George Mason scored one run on a Quinn-Irons single in the bottom of the fifth. As was the story all day, William & Mary answered as Luca Danos shot a bases loaded single to left to plate a pair and make it a 15-6 game.

Yaghoubi singled and scored in the eighth but the Patriots would cut into the Tribe's lead in the bottom half. The home team scored four runs on three hits to make the score 16-10. Craven would enter in the ninth to record the final three outs and preserve the victory.

Up Next: The Tribe will continue conference play with three games against CAA newcomer Monmouth beginning Friday at Plumeri Park.
