WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – Senior
George Davis won a third-set tiebreaker at No. 1 as William & Mary rallied for a 4-3 win over Gardner-Webb in a four and a half hour marathon on Monday afternoon at the McCormack-Nagelsen Tennis Center.
Davis and the graduate student trio of
Joseph Brailovsky,
Andres Silva and
Bill Duo won at the top four singles positions to lead the Tribe (6-5) to its second-straight victory.
With the match tied a three, it came down to the top spot where Davis and Gardner-Webb's Eduardo Dais split the opening two sets in tiebreakers. The Tribe senior jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the third, but the All-Big South First Teamer rallied for force a tiebreaker. Not to be outdone, Davis rolled in the breaker, dropping just one point in a 7-1 victory.
How It Happened
- The Runnin' Bulldogs (11-5) took a hotly-contested doubles point with all three positions being decided by matching 6-4 scores. Pairing together for the first time, Brailovsky and sophomore
Alexander Karman gave W&M the lead with a 6-4 victory over Numa Lemieux-Monette and Victor Putter at No. 2. Gardner-Webb rallied with victories at No. 1 and No. 3.
- W&M won the first set at four of the six singles matches and pulled even at one thanks to Duo's straight-sets win at No. 4. He downed Victor Putter, 6-3, 6-3, for his second-straight win and seventh overall.
- Brailovsky followed with a 6-3, 6-4 triumph over Alex Lepine at No. 2 to give W&M a 2-1 lead. It was Brailovsky's team-leading 15th win and fifth at the top two singles positions. Lepine entered the match at 11-3 on the year.
- After a Gardner-Webb win at No. 6, the balance of the match came down to a trio of three-set matches at No. 1, No. 3 and No. 5.
- Silva provided W&M with its third singles victory, rallying for a three-set win at No. 3. After dropping the opening set, the Tribe graduate student won the second set in a tiebreaker before pulling out a 6-4 third-set win over Putter. It was Silva's eighth win of the season and third at No. 3.
- Gardner-Webb, which upended CAA team Elon earlier this season, countered with a three-set win at No. 5 to set up a winner-take-all match at the top spot.
- Davis won his fourth match of the season at No. 1. Dais entered the match at 12-2 this season and is the three-time Big South Player of the Week.
