Women's Tennis Sweeps Longwood, 7-0

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – William & Mary rolled to a 7-0 clean sweep of in-state foe Longwood on Sunday afternoon at the McCormack-Nagelsen Tennis Center.
 
The Tribe (7-4) claimed the doubles point and then did not drop a set in picking up all six singles victories.
 
How It Happened
- The Green and Gold opened the match by taking the doubles point with victories at No. 1 and No. 3. Sophomore Hedda Gurholt and freshman Emma Pell gave W&M the early lead with a 6-1 win over Sophia Marchetta and Wiktoria Czerny on line three. The duo improved to 2-1.
- Graduate student Sofiya Kuzina and sophomore Ine Stange, who are ranked No. 50 nationally, cinched the initial point of the match, moving up to the top spot to post a victory. The Tribe pair won their seventh-straight, topping Karina Rizvanova and Emma Nurgazieva, 6-2.
- The Tribe posted wins at the top three spots to cement the team victory. Kuzina dropped just three games in a 6-3, 6-0 victory over Rizvanova at No. 3. She upped her season mark to 11-9.
- Senior Elisa Van Meeteren picked up a 6-1, 6-4 vicory over Maria Saez at No. 2 to push the Tribe lead to 3-0. Van Meeteren ran her team-leading singles ledger to 13-6, while going to 4-2 on line two.
- Gurholt clinched the Tribe victory by upending Nurgazieva, 6-0, 7-5, at the top spot. The Tribe sophomore improved to 7-3 at No. 1 and 12-7 overall.
- At No. 5, Stange won her fourth in a row, dropping just five games in a 6-1, 6-4 triumph over Nina Hederich. She improved to 5-1 in duals and 9-7 overall.
- Senior Alisia Manolescu and Pell rounded out the Tribe sweep with their second-straight singles victories. Manolescu downed Sophia Marchetta, 6-3, 6-4, at No. 4, while Pell notched a straight-sets win over Zoe Barton, 6-0, 7-6 (2), on line six. Manolescu improved to 9-6 overall and 5-3 in dual-match action, and Pell upped her ledger to 10-4 overall and 6-1 at No. 6.
 
Up Next
The Tribe returns to action when it continues its homestand against Pacific on Wednesday, March 15. The contest is set for 2 p.m. at the Mackesy Tennis Center at the Millie West Courts, weather permitting.
