WILLIAMSBURG, VA. - William & Mary dropped a tight pitching duel 2-1 to Charleston Friday afternoon at Plumeri Park. The Tribe out-hit the Cougars 5-3, but a double from Will Baumhofer in the fourth would score a pair of runs and be the difference in the game.
Ben Williamson reached base in all five of his appearances with two singles and three walks, while
Joe Delossantos extended his hitting streak to 19 games with an RBI double in the third.
Starter
Nate Knowles got the tough-luck loss after allowing just two hits and two runs over the opening 4.0 innings of the game.
Mike Weidinger pitched the fifth and sixth allowing zero hits and striking out four, while
Carter Lovasz took the final three frames and allowed just two base runners.
The teams traded scoreless frames early as starters
Nate Knowles and Ty Good were in control, but William & Mary broke open the scoring in the third with a two-out rally. Williamson took a four-pitch walk and would score moments later on Delossantos double down the left to give the Tribe a 1-0 lead.
Charleston answered with its own two-out rally to gain the lead in the fourth. A hit by pitch, bloop single, and Baumhofer double to deep right center would plate a pair of runs for the Cougars to make it a 2-1 game.
A leadoff single from
Nick Lottchea and a walk from Williamson would put the winning run on the bases in the ninth, but the Tribe could not push the runs across as Charleston escaped with a 2-1 win.
Up Next: The three-game series with the Cougars continues tomorrow as the two teams meet at 2:00 p.m. at Plumeri Park.
