Lax’s Winning Streak Snapped with Setback to VCU

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – The William & Mary lacrosse team had its two-game winning streak snapped with an 18-8 setback to VCU at Martin Family Stadium on Wednesday evening.
 
Although W&M (2-3) got on the scoreboard first with a goal by Sarah Cipolla early in the opening quarter, VCU (4-2) scored six of the next seven goals to take a 6-2 advantage.
 
Back-to-back scores by Delaney Roth and Lauren Rothstein early in the second quarter narrowed the margin to just 6-4, but the Rams answered with a 6-0 run to build a comfortable lead.
 
W&M cut the gap to seven on multiple occasions but was unable to get any closer the rest of the way.
 
Tribe Standouts
Cipolla led W&M offensively with three goals, while Justyce Barber tallied a pair of goals.
 
Cipolla added six draw controls, two ground balls and a pair of caused turnovers, while Caroline Hertzberg also posted six draw controls and two caused turnovers to go with three ground balls.
 
Kate Draddy, the reigning CAA Rookie of the Week, added a team-high five ground balls with a caused turnover.
 
Inside the Numbers
Although W&M owned a 17-12 advantage in draw controls, VCU totaled more ground balls (29-23) and committed two fewer turnovers (19-21).
 
Additionally, VCU outshot W&M, 33-28, including a 25-20 margin in shots on goal.

The Opposition
Julian George led the Rams with six points (5g, 1a), while Kelsey McDonnell (4g, 1a) and Mia George (3g, 1a) also came up big offensively.
 
Goalie Meghna Dawar recorded a game-high 12 saves with a .600 save percentage.

W&M will return to action when it plays at No. 5 Maryland next Wednesday at 5 p.m.
