NORFOLK, VA.- Nate Goranson and
Ben Williamson left the yard, but the Tribe fell 6-5 at Old Dominion Wednesday afternoon in Norfolk. The Tribe trailed 6-3 heading into the eighth and would get the winning run to the plate in the ninth, but could not break through.
Williamson had three hits including a triple to go with his first homer of the season and scored twice.
Max Winters added a triple, single, and sac fly to knock in a pair.
Brian Craven picked up the loss for the Tribe, moving to 2-2 on the season. Freshman
Owen Pierce struck out four and allowed one run over 3.1 innings of relief work, and
Rojo Prarie threw two hitless innings working the seventh and eighth.
Williamson got the scoring going early, belting a triple to deep right with a pair of outs in the first. He would later score on a wild pitch. After ODU plated two in the bottom half of the first. Goranson smashed the 11th pitch of his at bat over the left field wall to tie the game.
The Monarchs regained the lead in the bottom of the second via a sac fly to make it a 3-2 game. ODU tacked on a pair of runs in the third and one in the fourth to make it a 6-2 game, before Winters sent a sac fly to deep center to score
Joe Delossantos.
With one out in the eighth, Williamson would smoke the 3-2 pitch over the wall in left center for his first long-ball of the season, making it a two-run game.
Lucas Carmichael followed with a single through the right side and would score on Winters' triple to right to make it 6-5.
Prarie worked a quick eighth and the Tribe would get the tying run on the bases in the ninth, but be unable to push the man across.
Up Next: The Tribe is back in Williamsburg for three games this weekend against three separate opponents. William & Mary will host West Virginia on Friday, Fairfield University on Saturday, and Canisius College on Sunday afternoon.
