NORFOLK, Va. – The William & Mary lacrosse team opened its road slate with an 11-9 victory at Old Dominion on Wednesday evening.
Although ODU (2-2) jumped out to an early 2-0 advantage, W&M (1-2) held the Monarchs to just one goal during a span of more than 30 minutes to build an 8-3 lead late in the third quarter.
ODU narrowed the margin to just two goals on multiple occasions down the stretch, but the Tribe held on for the non-conference triumph.
Tribe Standouts
Sam Van Gieson totaled a team-high four goals on five shots, while freshmen
Sydney Witwer (3g) and
Kate Draddy (2g, 1a) added three points apiece. Witwer and Draddy's scores were the first of their collegiate careers. Draddy also posted a team-high five ground balls and three draw controls.
Caroline Donovan and
Paige Gilbert led the squad defensively with two caused turnovers apiece, while goalie
Elise Palmer posted 11 saves and a .550 save percentage.
Inside the Numbers
W&M outshot ODU, 27-25, while both squads put 20 shots on goal.
The Tribe owned a 15-12 advantage in ground balls and committed two fewer turnovers (19-21), while both teams recorded 12 draw controls apiece.
The Opposition
Olexa Moira led the Monarchs with three goals, while Lily Siskind and Callie Culhane added two goals apiece.
Caroline Shaefer totaled a team-high four draw controls.
