WILLIAMSBURG, VA.- A pair of late home runs spelled doom for William & Mary as the Tribe dropped a 4-3 10 inning game to Old Dominion Wednesday afternoon at Plumeri Park. The Tribe had chances to win the game, loading the bases in the ninth and tenth, but could not push the crucial run across.
Cory Wall struck out six, but was saddled with his first loss, bringing his record to 1-1 on the season.
Nate Knowles threw the opening three innings without surrendering a run and struck out three.
Mike Weidinger threw the middle three innings and struck out four allowing just one run.
The Tribe got on the scoreboard first in the third behind four singles and a pair of stolen bases.
Luca Danos would begin the frame with a hit and move to third on a knock from
Joe Delossantos.
Lucas Carmichael's RBI single knocked in Danos, and Delossantos would score on a shot to right off the bat of
Max Winters.
William & Mary tacked on a run in the fourth as
Nick Lottchea tripled off the top of the wall in deep right and would score on a two-out Delossantos single.
After 14 innings without surrendering a run, the Tribe would finally concede as Old Dominion benefited from a pair of hits to push across a man in the sixth to make it a 3-1 game.
Mike Weidinger prevented further damage by striking out the final two men he faced.
ODU would strike again in the top of the eighth as a lead off walk would come around to score on a two-run homer off the bat of Camden Grimes to tie the game at 3-3. The Tribe would load the bases in the ninth, but could not push across the winning run.
The Monarchs took the lead as Alex Bouche led off the tenth with a solo homer to left center. Winters led off the bottom half with a walk and moved to third on a
Corey Adams pinch hit single to right. A
Noah Zertuche walk would load the bases, but once again William & Mary was unable to capitalize.
