MACON, GA.- William & Mary bounced back from a pair of deficits, but could not get the big hit late as the Tribe fell at Mercer 5-4 in extra innings Sunday afternoon. The Bears capitalized on three base on balls in the tenth inning to take the rubber match in the three game set.
Rojo Prarie was electric out of the pen, striking out six over 3.0 innings of scoreless work and freshman
Owen Pierce allowed just one run and struck out five over 3.0 innings.
Ben Williamson had a pair of hits and knocked in a run in the Sunday matinee while
Nick Lottchea also knocked two hits and scored a run.
Mercer scored one run in the first and plated a pair of unearned runs in the second. Hits from
Corey Adams, Lottchea, and then Williamson would get the Tribe on the board with a run in the top half of the third.
Freshman
Noah Zertuche singled in
Lucas Carmichael in the Tribe half of the fourth to make it a 4-2 game, before the Green and Gold took advantage of a Mercer error in the fifth to plate two runners and tie the game at 4-4.
After six scoreless innings from the Tribe bullpen, Mercer finally broke through in the bottom of the 10th to take the 5-4 ballgame. William & Mary starter
Tom Mayer struck out three over 2.0 innings allowing one earned run, while
Kyle Locklear allowed one hit and one run over 1.1 innings of work in his W&M debut.
Up Next: The Tribe will return home for a pair of games against local foes next weekend, taking on Richmond for the home-opener on Tuesday and Old Dominion Wednesday at Plumeri Park.
