Women's Tennis Records Two Nationally-Ranked Doubles Wins at Maryland

COLLEGE PARK, Md. – William & Mary started hot behind a pair of nationally-ranked doubles wins, but Maryland pulled out a 6-1 win at the Junior Tennis Champions Center on Saturday.

The Tribe (4-2) won the doubles point to start the contest behind nationally-ranked wins from senior Elisa Van Meeteren and sophomore Emma Fernald at No. 1 and graduate student Sofiya Kuzina and sophomore Ine Stange at No. 2. The Terps (8-1) rallied by winning all six singles matches.

How It Happened
- After Maryland posted a doubles win at No. 3, the Tribe's top two teams pulled out impressive 6-4 wins to secure the match's initial point. Van Meeteren and Fernald topped the No. 54-ranked duo of Minorka Miranda and Marta Perez Mur on line one. The duo improved to 2-1 at No. 1 and 5-3 overall.
- Kuzina and Stange, the reigning CAA Doubles Team of the Week, upended the No. 19-ranked tandem of Selma Cadar and Mary Brumfield for their fourth-straight win. It was the highest-ranekd doubles win for a Tribe team since 2016.
- Maryland responded with straight-set wins at No. 1, No. 2, No. 3, No. 4 and No. 5 singles to claim the match.
- At No. 6, freshman Emma Pell won the opening set, 6-4, from Jojo Bach, but the Maryland player forced a decisive third set. Bach outlasted the Tribe freshman in the third-set super breaker, 10-5.
