Women's Tennis Rolls Past Hampton, 7-0

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – Playing at the newly completed Mackesy Tennis Center at the Millie West Courts for the first time in 2023, William & Mary women's tennis rolled to a 7-0 victory over new Colonial Athletic Association counterpart Hampton on Thursday afternoon.
 
How It Happened
- W&M (5-2, 2-0 CAA) captured the doubles point for the sixth time in seven matches this season with wins at No. 1 and No. 3.
- The Tribe's top pair of senior Elisa Van Meeteren and sophomore Emma Fernald won for the third time in four tries at the top spot. The duo downed Angelina Blinova and Sofia Sokolova, 6-3, to give W&M the early lead. They improved to 6-3 overall on the year.
- Graduate student Sofiya Kuzina and sophomore Ine Stange, who earned the No. 35 national ranking in doubles earlier this week, clinched the point for the second-straight match with their fifth win in a row. The tandem rolled to a 6-2 victory over Lucia Jorrin Fernandez and Franzene Tsui on line three.
- In singles, Stange quickly pushed the Tribe advantage to 2-0 with a win at No. 5. The Tribe sophomore dropped just three games in a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Fernandez. It was her seventh win overall as she improved to 3-1 at No. 5.
- Freshman Emma Pell continued her strong spring with a straight-sets win at No. 6. The Tribe rookie topped Laura Peralta, 6-4, 6-0, for her eighth win on the year. Pell is now 5-1 in dual-match action.
- Van Meeteren clinched the Tribe's second CAA win with a triumph at No. 2. She took the opening set, 6-1, before rallying past Sokolova in the second, 6-4. It was Van Meeteren's team-leading 11th win of the season.  
- Kuzina upped her mark to 3-1 at No. 3 with a three-set win over Diana Starodubtseva, 6-1, 2-6, 6-2. She owns nine wins overall on the year.
- At the top spot, sophomore Hedda Gurholt posted a third-set victory, downing Blinova, 7-5, 4-6, 10-5. Gurholt won for the ninth time this season and improved to 4-2 at No. 1.
- Fernald rounded out the Tribe singles sweep with a come-from-behind three-set win at No. 4. She topped Mio Kozaki, 4-6, 6-3, 10-7, for her team-leading 11th singles win of the year.
