WILLIAMSBURG, Va.—The William & Mary volleyball team won Saturday's opening set against Northeastern in Kaplan Arena, before dropping the next three to fall to the Huskies 3-1.
The match was the first of two between the Tribe and Huskies this weekend, as they meet again tomorrow.
A .341 hitting percentage was able to spur W&M on to a first set victory, 27-25. The Tribe went on a 6-0 run to go up 21-17 thanks to three kills by
Olivia Esposito and a pair by
Sarah Callender.
The Huskies fought back to tie things at 25-all before
Taylor Burrell and
Sabrina Malcolm put the set away for the Tribe, each earning kills.
The second set saw the Tribe jump out to an early 4-1 lead, before Northeastern won seven of the next nine points to hop in front. From there it seemed as though the Huskies were destined to win the set, leading 19-13, but the Green and Gold stormed back.
Maddie Meyers made her presence felt down the stretch of the second set, picking up three kills in the span of four points to tie it at 23. Meyers added another kill later to have the Tribe just a point away from taking a 2-0 lead at 26-25. The Huskies, however won the next three taking the set 28-26.
Northeastern controlled set three from the start, but the Tribe always remained in striking distance. They were able to keep their deficit between one and three, until they charged to a 4-0 scoring run to go ahead 24-23, thanks to a Callender kill and errors by the Huskies.
W&M once again couldn't capitalize on a pair of set points and fell by a 28-26 tally.
The Tribe was forced to play catch-up in set four as well, falling behind by scores of 7-2 and 11-6. Coach
Ryan Adams squad remained resilient however, being able to tie it at 19-all off an
Eleanor Stothoff kill.
The Huskies were able to close the door once again though, going on to win the set 25-23 and the match 3-1.
Callender led the way for the Tribe, posting a double-double with 18 kills and 15 digs. Stothoff and Meyers added 12 and 11 kills respectively.
Esposito, the team's leader in blocks, led the way in that category again with eight on the afternoon, while
Amy Schwem and
Emma Minnick handed out 33 and 25 assists apiece.
