Volleyball Earns Senior Day Victory in Straight Sets

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – Returning to Kaplan with a vengeance, William & Mary volleyball (13-13, 8-8 CAA) caps their home schedule on a high note with a sweep of Northeastern (11-11, 9-7 CAA) on Sunday.

The Tribe built momentum throughout the match, taking the senior-day win in straight sets, 3-0 (28-26, 25-20, 25-12).

The final game of the year at Kaplan Arena was also the final Kaplan appearance for three graduating Tribe players as Taylor Burrell, Emma Minnick and Anna Lucy Black were honored prior to the match.

The Tribe's 13th win of the year surpasses 2022 for the most single-season wins since 2009 as Head Coach Ryan Adams continues to build momentum in his first year at the helm of the program.

Burrell and Eleanor Stothoff led the Tribe with 11 kills each in the match, combining for more than half of the team's kills.

In the first set, Northeastern grabbed the first two points to open the match, and William & Mary traded a few points before evening up the score at 4-4 with a Burrell kill.

Eleven tied scores and three lead changes were the story of the first frame to the final point. With a 24-22 lead, the Tribe reached set point and the Huskies survived by returning two points and tying the set. Extending the score to 26-26, the Tribe sealed the first set win with a block from Sabrina Malcolm and Nicole Smith and an attack error on the Huskies.

The Tribe answered Northeastern's 2-0 lead to begin the second set with an unbelievable 11-0 scoring run, featuring five kills from Stothoff. She dominated in the second frame with seven kills and an impressive .385 hitting percentage.

The Huskies battled back, climbing to a three-point deficit at 23-20, but graduate student duo of Burrell and Minnick capped the set with a kill and an ace, respectively.

The Tribe dominated the final set, with a .333 hitting percentage and 14 kills along with three aces.

Going on an 8-0 run, the Tribe took a nine-point lead with five kills – a pair from Olivia Esposito and Smith each and one from Sarah Callender – and a Malcolm service ace.

With a convincing 17-10 lead, the Tribe put away the match by allowing only two more point from the Huskies.

Minnick served an ace to reach match point for the Tribe and Burrell and Malcolm made a huge stop at the net to secure the win for W&M.

The Green and Gold have one more weekend of regular season play and are fighting for playoff contention. With wins on Sunday, Delaware and Campbell joined Towson as teams who have clinched a championship berth, which leaves three unclaimed spots in the tournament.
