WILLIAMSBURG, Va.— William & Mary women's soccer honored their 10-member senior class on Sunday in style, scoring their most goals in a single game since 2003, beating Hampton 7-0.
The Tribe spread the wealth throughout the afternoon, with six different players recording a point, 14 players recording a shot and 27 players seeing action in total.
Coming off their first loss of the season, the Green and Gold put the pedal to the metal from the opening whistle, only allowing the Pirates one shot in the game, coming in the 7
th minute.
Zoe Doughty, one of the 10 members of the program honored pregame, collected the save.
After a couple of saves from the Hampton keeper kept the match scoreless,
Elaina Longjohn got the party started with goal in the 21
st minute, her second of the season.
The Tribe's leader in goals,
Ivey Crain, followed suit just six minutes later, breaking free down the right side to make it 2-0 W&M.
As the half wound down, it seemed as maybe the frantic Tribe attack had simmered, until the 39
th minute when
Leah Iglesias was taken down in the box to earn a penalty kick. Iglesias proceeded to convert the chance for her second goal of the year and the hosts went to the half up 3-0.
William & Mary (8-1-5, 5-1-2 CAA) owned a 16-1 advantage in shots after 45 minutes.
The second half, which started mundane, became even more lopsided than the first when Crain and Iglesias decided they weren't done getting their names on the scoresheet.
Crain took a pass from Longjohn and caught the keeper out of position in the 59
th minute for her sixth goal of the season. Iglesias found the back of the net again in six mintues later and the Tribe had a five-goal lead.
Another senior,
Kenna Zier, had her moment to shine in the 70
th minute, scoring an unassisted goal for her second tally of the year and make the match 6-0.
With time dwindling down
Ava Marvin and
Mia Suchora put an exclamation point on the contest when Suchora fired back-to-back shots in the 88
th minute. Both attempts were saved, but the second save led to a rebound chance for Marvin who calmly tapped the ball in the net to secure the 7-0 win.
When the dust had settled the Tribe had completely overwhelmed the Pirates, outshooting them 41-1 and 25-0 in the second half.
The 41 W&M shots were by far the most in the CAA this year and ties for the fifth most in NCAA DI. Their 22 shots on goal is the ninth most nationally and second most in the conference this season.
Morgan Wood and
Ava Lentz came on for W&M in the second half to relieve Doughty in goal.
