WILMINGTON, N.C.— The William & Mary women's soccer team was handed their second loss of the season on Thursday night, dropping a 2-0 decision to UNCW on the road.
The Seahawks were punctual with their attack out of the gate, scoring 36 seconds into the game to take a 1-0 lead.
W&M kept their wits about them and controlled the tempo of the game for the remainder of the first half but struggled to get chances to develop.
Gabriella Kurtas was able to test the UNCW keeper, but the shot was saved in the 9
th minute.
The Tribe's next chance would come in the 32
nd minute when
Lindsay Wilson took a long shot that was scooped up by the UNCW goalie.
Ivey Crain, the Green and Gold's leading goal scorer, took a shot in the 43
rd minute and another less than a minute later. The first chance was saved and the second went wide as the match went to the half 1-0.
Shots were in favor of the Tribe after 45 minutes, 5-2.
Morgan Wood replaced Doughty in goal in the second half for the Tribe.
The second half began in a rather sluggish fashion, with the both sides battling for possession.
The half's first shot wasn't recorded until the 63
rd minute when UNCW appeared to be in on goal.
Nicole Sellers slid in at the last second to block the attempt before it could get towards Wood and the score remained 1-0 Seahawks.
W&M took their first crack of the frame minutes later when Crain settled a pass from
Lindsay Wilson at the top of the box and fired a hard shot that was gotten to by the UNCW keeper.
With the Tribe applying constant pressure as the half wore on, the Seahawks earned some more breathing room in the 74
th minute. A corner was bent towards goal and curled in the net over Wood who was unable to fight off the traffic in front.
Trailing by a pair, W&M was unable to amount enough of an attack to draw closer and the game ended 2-0.
The final shot total favored the Tribe 9-6. Wood made one save in the second half.
