Volleyball Falls to Stony Brook in Road Bout

STONY BROOK, N.Y. – William & Mary Volleyball (12-11, 7-6 CAA) took a victory in the back-and-forth first set, but Stony Brook (11-13, 6-7 CAA) answered with wins in the next three to take the first matchup of the weekend, 3-1 (29-27, 19-25, 18-25, 22-25).

Taylor Burrell led the Green and Gold with 13 kills and freshman right side Katherine Arnason earned double-digit kills, hitting .556 with 10 kills and no errors on 18 attacks. 

Emma Minnick and Amy Schwem each posted double-doubles, as Minnick tallied 25 assists and 10 digs and Schwem totaled 21 assists with 12 digs. Lindsay Kahren was an assist shy of a double-double with 18 digs and nine assists.

The Tribe were resilient in the first set, winning a back-and-forth frame that saw 15 tied scores. In a close battle, the largest lead in the frame was four points by W&M.

Stony Brook took a two-point lead late in the set with their 21st point.

Arnason capped a 4-0 scoring run with a huge swing to take a 23-21 lead.

The Seawolves survived set point four times, but the Tribe capped the first set on the fifth set point attempt with kills from Sarah Callender and Arnason for the lead in the match with a score of 29-27.

The Seawolves took the advantage in the match back with dominant showings in the second and third sets. Getting ahead early, the Seawolves didn't let go of their lead in either set. 

Stony Brook opened the fourth frame with a 7-2 lead, but the Tribe worked out of the hole with an impressive rally. The Green and Gold rattled off a 14-6 run to come back from a the commanding Seawolves lead early in the set. 

Tied at 22-22, Stony Brook capped the match with a pair of kills and a service ace from senior libero Julia Patsos.

The Tribe will be back in action tomorrow at 1 p.m. against the Seawolves as they look to return to the win column.
