Women's Soccer Caps Regular Season with 2-1 Win Over Huskies

WILLIAMSBURG, Va.— The William & Mary women's soccer team capped off their regular season with a 2-1 win over Northeastern on Sunday. The Tribe was powered by first half goals from Madison Moon and Kenna Zier.

The Tribe came out on the attack in their final home game of the season, getting their first chance in the 12th minute.

Ginny Delacruz played a high arcing pass to Leah Iglesias, who got behind the defense and charged toward goal. Iglesias got to the ball before the keeper but her shot just rose above the crossbar.

The Green and Gold kept up the pressure when Ava Marvin took a shot that rattled the crossbar in the 16th minute. The rebound ricocheted out to Lindsay Wilson who fired a shot that was saved but ended up at the feet of Moon. The sophomore tapped the ball into the empty net to give the Tribe a 1-0 lead.

Five minutes later W&M doubled their advantage, with Iglesias and Delacruz teaming up on the attack again. Delacruz played the ball forward to Iglesias who swiftly crossed the ball into the box. Zier darted in to fire off a shot from the middle of the box for her third goal of the season.

The Tribe was able to hold the 2-0 advantage for the rest of the half, thanks to a great point-blank stop by Morgan Wood in the 31stminute.

After the first half of play shots were tied at five apiece.

Early in the second half the Huskies were able to cut the Tribe advantage in half, scoring in the 54th minute to make it a 2-1 match.

While Northeastern continued to search for an equalizer the Tribe back line kept the Huskies' attack at bay, as W&M held on for a 2-1 win to complete the regular season 9-3-6, 6-3-3 CAA.

The final shot total favored the Huskies 10-7. Wood made five saves on the afternoon for the Tribe.

W&M will take on the same Northeastern squad on Thursday in the CAA quarterfinals. The game will either take place at Towson or Hofstra depending on other results Sunday. The Tribe will enter the CAA Tournament as the five seed.
