TOWSON, Md.— The William & Mary women's soccer team outlasted Northeastern to book their trip to the CAA semifinals thanks to a 7-6 win in a penalty shootout.
The Tribe and Huskies played 110 minutes even at 1-1 before heading to the shootout to decide the quarterfinal winner.
The first chance at goal belonged to the fifth-seeded Tribe.
Ivey Crain received a cross from
Ginny Delacruz inside the box and volleyed the ball just over the crossbar in the 9
th minute.
Northeastern took their first shot roughly five minutes later, that went wide, and another long shot that was saved by
Morgan Wood later in the half.
W&M jumped in front in the 30
th minute via leading scorer
Ivey Crain. Crain, who was named to the All-CAA second team yesterday, skied through the air and scored off a header for her seventh goal on the season.
Molly Widderich, a CAA all-rookie selection, served the ball in and was credited with the assist.
Now, in front by a goal, Wood did her best to make sure the Tribe took their advantage to the half, snaring a corner kick out of the air before any Northeastern attacker could get to the ball in the 35
th minute.
Kenna Zier looked to extend the Green and Gold's advantage before half, but her shot missed high and the Tribe took a 1-0 lead to the break.
W&M led in shots 6-4 after 45 minutes.
Early in the second frame the Tribe kept up the pressure with a free kick and a corner kick but were unable to get a shot on goal, as the score remained 1-0.
The Huskies responded with chances of their own, having a pair of shots go wide in the 52
nd and 53
rd minute respectively.
Crian seemed destined for her second goal of the game when
Jillian O'Toole played her a precise through-ball in the 63
rdminute. Crain collected the pass all alone, but the Northeastern keeper got just enough of her shot to steer it wide.
After Wood made a save in the 66
th minute both teams battled for possession, with Northeastern looking for an equalizer and the Tribe an insurance goal.
The Huskies got what they were looking for in the 79
th minute, scoring off a shot from the top of the box to tie the score at one.
With time winding down in regulation, Wood made one last big stop for the Tribe in the 88
th minute, saving a clean look at goal from the Huskies and the match headed to overtime 1-1.
The first overtime was dormant, with both team's backline thwarting any possible attacks.
Through 100 minutes shots were 12-9 Northeastern.
The Huskies got a free kick in the 102
nd minute of the second overtime, with the ensuing shot just snuck wide of the far post to keep the game tied.
Another Northeastern shot threatened goal in the 108
th minute missing just high. W&M had a corner in the final minutes of overtime and was unable to capitalize, sending the match to penalty kicks.
After both teams went 100% in the five rounds of the shootout, things turned to sudden victory in the sixth round. Both teams converted again to tie things at six-all, before Wood made a diving saving to give the Tribe a chance to end it.
Fellow goalkeeper
