WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – The William & Mary volleyball team fell at home for the first time in 2023 as North Carolina A&T rebounded following Thursday's Tribe victory, overtaking the Tribe in three sets, 3-0 (29-27, 25-21, 26-24), on Friday night.
The Tribe fought to the final point, pushing the first and third sets beyond 25 points, but Naiya Sawtelle and the Aggies were relentless on the attack to push past the Tribe for the sweep.
William & Mary fell to 12-10 on the season and 7-5 in the CAA with the loss and NC A&T improves to 8-12 and 6-6 in the CAA.
The Aggies took the first point of the match with a kill from Sawtelle and after trading points to a 4-4 tie, NC A&T pulled ahead with a 6-0 run. Working back from the early deficit, the Tribe were able to take the lead, surviving set point three times before the visitor took the first set.
The Tribe jumped out to an early 6-2 lead in the second frame, aided by kills from
Olivia Esposito and
Taylor Burrell. The Aggies posted a dominant run in the middle of the set, taking a four-point lead.
Responding with a 4-0 run of their own, the Tribe erased the deficit, tying the set at 18-18 with a service ace from
Emma Minnick and a kill from
Sabrina Malcolm. Once again, the Aggies recovered their lead to take a 2-0 lead in the match.
In the decisive third set, the Tribe added 14 kills and a pair of aces as a team, but the Aggies were able to push past W&M with a pair of kills to cap their win.
In three sets,
Sarah Callender was just two kills shy of a double-double, recording eight kills and 11 digs. Burrell led the Tribe with 10 kills.
UP NEXT
The Tribe return to New York for a matchup at Stony Brook, continuing CAA play on the road. The Green and Gold will play a pair of 1 p.m. matches on Saturday, Oct. 28 and Sunday, Oct. 29, before returning to Kaplan Arena on Nov. 4-5 to take on Northeastern.
