WILLIAMSBURG, Va.— The William & Mary women's soccer team fell for the first time at home this season, losing to Towson 3-0 on Thursday night.
The Tribe struggled offensively out of the gate and the Tigers took advantage.
After taking a shot in the 3
rd minute that was off-frame, Towson opened the scoring in the 11
th minute on a well-placed shot that beat W&M goalkeeper
Morgan Wood.
Both teams battled for possession in the midfield following the tally, until the Tigers looked to expand their lead in the 34
th minute, but Wood saved that shot attempt to keep it 1-0.
William & Mary didn't attempt a shot until the 37
th minute, and it was a dangerous one at that.
Lindsay Wilson played in a freekick from 30 yards out towards
Jillian O'Toole. O'Toole was able to get her head on it, handcuffing the Tiger keeper who was just able to punch it away.
As the teams headed to the halftime break Towson led 1-0 and 4-1 in shots.
The Tigers doubled their lead just eight minutes in to the second half with another high arching shot.
Kenna Zier tried to pull the hosts closer in the 60
th minute but had her shot just skip by the right post to keep it a 2-0 game.
Wood made a couple of stellar saves on a Towson breakaway moments later, but as the rebound pinballed around the box the Tribe were called for a penalty. The Tigers were unable to capitalize missing the PK wide left.
They had a chance at redemption less than two minutes later however, when W&M was called for another foul in the box in the 66
th minute. The chance was converted to put the Tigers up 3-0.
Ivey Crain tried to get the Tribe on the board in the 73
rd minute, but her hard-hit shout bounced into the arms of the Towson keeper.
The Tribe was unable to mount a comeback effort down the stretch as the game finished 3-0.
The final shot tally was 13-9 in favor of the Tigers. Wood made three saves for the Green and Gold on the evening.
There was a silver lining for the Tribe on Thursday, however. Due to other results from around the conference W&M clinched a berth to the CAA tournament for the second consecutive year.
The Tribe will either be the four or five seed in a game hosted by the regular season champion. Towson plays Hofstra to decide who that will be on Sunday. Sunday's games will also determine the Green and Gold's opponent.
