CHAPEL HILL, N.C.— The William & Mary men's soccer team earned a hard-fought 0-0 draw against No. 11 North Carolina in Chapel Hill on Tuesday night to wrap up their non-conference slate.
The opening half of play saw both teams often battling for possession in the midfield. Neither side had many chances on-net in the opening frame, with UNC (6-2-5, 1-2-3 ACC) getting the first crack in the 4
th minute.
Cole McNally, who has started every game in goal for the Tribe this season, made the save.
McNally didn't see action again till making a save a minute before halftime.
The Green and Gold tried a pair of shots in the first 45, with
Alfredo Bozalongo rifling a shot in the 12
th minute. His attempt from the top of the box whizzed outside the right post.
Aidan Morrison took the other W&M shot in the first half, having his try for goal was saved in the 24
th minute, and the match went to the break tied 0-0.
After McNally made a stop on a Carolina shot in the 58
th minute, the Tribe started a counterattack that led to a
Bryce Smith shot that missed high.
William & Mary (2-7-5, 1-3-2 CAA) kept up the pressure, with Caldas getting a chance to break the scoreless tie in the 62
nd minute.
Caldas slipped by one defender on the right side and seemed as though he had a clear look at goal. That was until a secondary UNC defender got in the way to get a piece of his shot and guide it wide for a corner.
Six minutes later W&M had another shot on-frame when
Daniel Salom launched a long shot that required a leaping save by the North Carolina keeper.
With time winding down it seemed like the match was destined for a draw until
Diogo Branco found the ball at the top of the box in the 88
th minute. Branco let off a shot that froze the UNC goalie but pinged the right post, eventually leading to the 0-0 final score.
McNally was never tested after his 58
th minute save, making three saves on the night, as the Tar Heels last three shot attempts were off target.
The final shot tally favored the hosts, 10-7.
