Women's Soccer Closes in on Postseason Berth with Tie at Charleston

MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C.— Nora Green-Orset's first half goal aided the William & Mary women's soccer team to a 1-1 tie on the road against the College of Charleston Sunday.

The Cougars seemed comfortable on their home pitch from the get-go, scoring off a free-kick in the 5th minute to take the lead.

W&M (8-2-6, 5-2-3 CAA) was undeterred after giving up the early tally, however, and responded by controlling possession for much of the half.

The Tribe, coming off a shutout loss on Thursday, constantly put pressure on the backline of Charleston (2-9-5, 2-5-4 CAA), with Kayleigh Shackford, Ginny Delacruz and Ivey Crain all putting shots on-frame in the middle part of the half. The Tribe would be rewarded for their efforts in the 29th minute.

Delacruz played in a free kick from left of the box that was perfectly placed outside of the six. Green-Orset flew in and volleyed the ball into the top left corner of the net to tie the score at one.

The goal was the third of the season for Green-Orset, while Delacruz earned her third assist of the year.

The match headed to the half still tied 1-1, with the Green and Gold controlling the shot total 9-7.

Charleston had the first scoring chance of the second half a little over five minutes into the frame. A well struck shot from outside the box forced Tribe keeper, Morgan Wood, make a sprawling save to her right to keep the game tied.

Wood made her second start of the year and first since August for W&M. She finished with five saves on the afternoon.

The Tribe had sporadic chances to try and take the lead themselves in the second 45 minutes, with Crain and Leah Iglesias having shots saved in the 62nd and 73rd minute respectively.

With the match still tied with time winding down, Crain had one last chance to try put the Tribe in the winner's circle. She shook free from the defense in the 87th minute and let off a shot that was saved by the Courgars' keeper to secure the 1-1 draw.

Charleston outshot W&M 11-6 in the second half and 18-15 on the day. The draw puts the Tribe just a single point away from clinching a CAA postseason berth with two matches left.
