WILLIAMSBURG, Va.— The William & Mary men's soccer team outshot College of Charleston 18-7 on Saturday afternoon but dropped the contest 3-2 at a rainy Martin Family Stadium.
The match was a physical one from the start, with the sides combining for 30 fouls and seven cards by day's end.
Aidan Morrison attacked early, getting a shot on goal just 11 seconds into the game, but it was saved in the top left portion of the goal.
The Cougars were the ones to break the scoreless tie a goal in the 12
th minute off a free kick. Another Charleston goal in the 32
nd minute pushed the visitors advantage to 2-0.
The two-goal lead stood until the Tribe got their offense going seven minutes later via
Daniel Salom.
Alfredo Bozalongo passed the ball off to Salom off a free kick who then fired a hard shot from the left side of the box that beat the keeper to make it 2-1.
Charleston quickly got that goal back however, scoring just 35 seconds later, and the game headed to the half 3-1.
The Tribe outshot the Cougars 9-5 through 45 minutes.
When the second half began, the rain came down even harder and continued for the rest of the match.
The Green and Gold were poised on defense in the second frame, only allowing two shots from the Cougars in the half.
On the other end, Charleston (4-4-5, 2-2-2 CAA) did their best to bend but not break against a Tribe attack that took nine second half shots with four being on-frame.
Evan Rabush and
Diogo Branco each had chances to pull W&M (2-7-4, 1-3-2 CAA) within one, but had their shots saved in the 55
th and 69
th minute respectively.
The Tribe was eventually able to make it a one-goal game in the 82
nd minute off a beautiful attack. Branco left the ball off for Morrison at the top of the box. Morrison, who like as though he may shoot, passed it over to a streaking
Lucas Caldas who finished off the play for his fifth goal of the year.
With W&M now searching for an equalizer, they were forced to drop down to 10 men in the 88
th minute when
Cole Knapp was sent off after his second red card.
Joe Core had a threatening shot go just wide in the waning moments and the Cougars espaced with a 3-2 win.
