Field Hockey Drops Friday Contest to Drexel

PHILADELPHIA, Pa.— The William & Mary field hockey team dropped a CAA matchup in Philadelphia to Drexel on Friday afternoon. The final score was 7-1.

Drexel, who has struggled against the Tribe over the last decade, wasted no time getting on the board. The Dragons capitalized on a congested chance right in front of the goal to make it 1-0 three minutes in.

Drexel added another in the 8th minute, and another quickly after that to make it 3-0 Dragons. The Tribe tried to flip momentum but struggled to get their offense going, with shots sitting at 4-2 Drexel after the first.

The Tribe had a chance to pull closer early in the second quarter, but Maddie McGaughey had her shot saved off a corner.

Drexel pushed their lead to 4-0 five minutes into the frame, scoring off a corner of their own.

Another goal in the waning moments of the half gave the Dragons a 5-0 lead at the break.

The hosts continued to apply pressure in the third and thwart any W&M attacks. Both shots on goal for the Tribe were saved in the frame, and Drexel added another goal to make it 6-0.

Alexandra de Jesus, who entered in goal at the beginning of the second half, made a pair of saves to start the fourth quarter. The second save allowed the Tribe to get out in transition and net their first goal of the game. Josie Mae Gruendel earned her first career tally off a pass from Lauren Curran to cut the Dragon lead to five.

Drexel answered moments later, however, to make it a 7-1 final score.

Shots favored the Dragons 15-11, including shots on goal at 12-6. Maddie George made three saves, and de Jesus two for W&M.
