Field Hockey Falls to Richmond, 3-1

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – William & Mary field hockey jumped out to an early lead but could not hold on in dropping a 3-1 decision to visiting Richmond on Friday night at Busch Field.

Senior Lauren Curran gave the Tribe (2-1) a first-quarter lead, scoring on a rebound for her second tally of the season. On the play, graduate student Aidan Rossman carried the ball along the left endline before centering a pass to Tabby Billingham. The Tribe senior's shot was blocked by Richmond goalkeeper Erika Latta. Curran jumped on the round and finished to the near post to give W&M a 1-0 lead with four minutes left in the first quarter.

Richmond (2-1) generated a number of chances in the opening half, but Tribe goalkeeper Maddie
George was up to the task, making seven saves in the opening 30 minutes.

The Spiders finally broke through with less than two minutes remaining in the second quarter. Regan McCrossman carried the ball through the midfield and into the top of the circle on the break. She wrapped up shot high to the right side of the cage to the tie match at one.

Out of the intermission, the Spiders took the lead just 1:43 into the second half. UR generated the chance on the break once again. George made the stop on the initial shot from McCrossman, but Stevie Drum scored off the rebound, lifting the shot past the Tribe goalkeeper.

W&M pushed for the equalizer generating all three of its corners in the third and fourth periods. Unfortunately, the Spider sealed the game as Madi Hyatt redirected a shot from Lindsey Frank to extended the UR lead to 3-1 in the 59th minute.
