GREENVILLE, N.C. – Junior
Elaina Longjohn buried the game-winner in the 65th and William & Mary turned in its most complete performance of the season, upending East Carolina, 1-0, on Sunday afternoon at Johnson Stadium.
W&M (4-4-1) knocked off the Pirates by a 1-0 score line for the second-straight year and in the process posted its third clean sheet in the last four games and fifth overall this season. ECU (6-3-1) entered the week receiving votes in the United Soccer Coaches National Top 25 and was coming off a 2-1 upset win over No. 19-ranked SMU in Dallas this week. The Tribe joins some elite company in picking up a win over the Pirates as ECU's only losses prior to Sunday were to top-5 teams in No. 3 Duke and No. 5 South Carolina.
After a scoreless opening 45 minutes that featured just one shot on goal between the teams, W&M broke through on a nice play from senior
Jillian O'Toole. The Tribe midfielder took the ball from her Pirate counterpart and raced toward the penalty area, setting up W&M with a break chance. She laid the ball off to Longjohn inside the 18-yard box, and the junior strike finished inside the right post from eight yards out.
The goal was Longjohn's third of the season and second game-winner. O'Toole picked up her first helper on the year.
The Tribe defense made the goal standup as senior goalkeeper
Zoe Doughty made three saves, all in the second half, to register her fourth shutout. Doughty came up big in the 51st minute as ECU's Brooke Burzynski got free across the middle of the penalty area. Her shot to the near post from eight yards out was pushed wide by the Tribe GK.
W&M nearly found the game's first goal early in the second half. Off a corner kick in the 59th minute, sophomore
Emma D'Alesandro's header was cleared off the line by ECU defender Maycie McDougal.
ECU held a slim 11-9 advantage in shots, but both teams had three opportunities on goal.

Quotable
"We stuck to our game plan knowing the second game in a weekend is always a tough one. Going in, we knew we'd have to rely on a lot of substitutes and they were really the difference with every one of them providing a spark. Our back line and overall defending was really good all over the field. The players deserve a lot of credit for bouncing back from Georgetown with two of our best games of the season! We are really proud of the effort today." – Head Coach
