STONY BROOK, N.Y. – Seniors
Marcos Villeda and
Alexander Levengood provided the offense and graduate student
Danilo Nikcevic and the defense made it stand up as William & Mary picked up a key Colonial Athletic Association win, 2-0, at Stony Brook on Saturday afternoon.
With the win, the Tribe (2-2-3) moved to 2-1 in CAA play and ran its unbeaten streak to four (2-0-2.
The Tribe was the more dangerous side in the opening 45 minutes, outshooting Stony Brook (3-4, 1-2 CAA), 8-5. After Levengood hit the post in the 28th minute, W&M finally got on the board in the six minutes later thanks to a nice pass from Levengood.
The Green and Gold broke free in transition with senior
Diba Nwegbo dribbling down the right side. His pass through the midfield found the foot of Levengood, who settled and placed a nicely weighted ball into the penalty area. Villeda ran onto it and redirected it to the left of the rushing Seawolves goalkeeper. It was Villeda's first goal of the season and his first career game-winner.
The Tribe doubled its lead in the 81st minute as Levengood found the back of the net for the second time in CAA play. The sequence was initially set up by a free kick just outside the box, but Stony Brook goalkeeper Curtis Copenhaver made the diving save to his right on senior
Alfredo Bozalongo's shot. Sophomore
Augie Cooper served it back into the six. Copenhaver got a hand to it, but not enough to keep it from its intended target and Levengood roofed it from in close.
Nikcevic and the Tribe defense posted its second-straight shutout. The graduate goalkeeper made a season-high six saves, including five in the second half to keep the Tribe in front at key moments.
