Matthew Feinstein Sets Tournament and Program Record in Winning VCU Shootout

9/13/2022 5:56:00 PM

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – William & Mary graduate student Matthew Feinstein birdied his final hole to win the VCU Shootout with a record-tying 15-under 201 on Tuesday afternoon at the Country Club of Virginia's Tuckahoe Creek Course.

Feinstein's score tied the VCU Shootout record and was the lowest for anyone since the tournament moved to the Country Club of Virginia in 2015. He also topped the W&M school record previously at 14-under held by Alex Hicks in 2013-14 (Joe Agee Invitational) and Brent Paladino in 2008-09 (Raines Development Intercollegiate).

As a team, the Tribe shattered its previous 54-hole school record, set at this event last season, by seven shots, finishing at 21-under 843. W&M posted its third-straight round under par thanks to a 2-under 286 on Tuesday. The Green and Gold finished in share of ninth with James Madison, but was just three shots out of fifth place. On Monday, W&M set school records for 18- and 36-hole scoring, giving the Tribe a trio of team marks at the event.

Charleston Southern and VCU both topped the tournament record by eight shots, finishing at 36-under 828. The Buccaneers won the event on the fourth hole of a sudden death team tiebreaker.

Feinstein was masterful over the two days, finishing with 15 birdies, which ranked seventh in the field, and an eagle. He topped the event in par-5 scoring at 8-under. Feinstein was bogey-free over his final 36 holes, while totaling 12 birdies. On Monday, he equaled the school record for 18- and 36-hole scoring. Feinstein is the first W&M individual champion since David Hicks won the Fighting Irish Invitational in 2017-18.

Sophomore Logan Hunter turned in a top-20 effort, posting one of the best 54-hole scoring totals in school history. He was under par in all three rounds, finishing with a 2-under 70 on Tuesday. His 7-under 209 earned a share of 19th and is the sixth-best scoring total in W&M history.

Junior Will Rieck and freshman Charlie Bundy rounded out the Tribe scoring lineup on Tuesday with a 74 and 75, respectively. Rieck posted a 1-over 217 to finish in a share of 49th place.
