RICHMOND, Va. – William & Mary women's soccer suffered a 1-0 setback at VCU on Thursday evening. The loss snapped the Tribe's (2-3) two-match win streak.
The Rams (1-1-3), who won the Atlantic 10 regular season title last season, scored the match's lone goal in the 36th minute off a rebound. A through ball led Kendyl Sarver free into the penalty area. Doughty was able to get a hand to block Sarver's initial shot, but the rebound spilled over and Natalia Santangelo punched it into an empty net.
W&M's best scoring chance came in the 27th minute. Sophomore
Marisa McClure made a nice play to generate a turnover in the midfield and carried the ball forward, before feeding freshman
Ivey Crain into the top of the penalty area. Her shot from 15 yards out on the left side beat the VCU goalkeeper but rang off the left post.
For the game, VCU outshot W&M, 14-5, including a 6-1 cushion in shots on goal. The Rams generated eight corner kicks compared to two for the Tribe.
Senior goalkeeper
Zoe Doughty recorded five saves in goal for the Tribe. Crain topped the Green and Gold with two shots.

Quotable
"VCU put a ton of pressure on us early and prevented us from establishing a lot of possession in the first half. Our back line and GK defended valiantly, but we succumbed to a goal late in the first half. We managed to turn things around in the second half, moving the ball much better and putting together long stretches of combinations but failed to find the equalizer." - Head Coach
Julie Shackford
