WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – Despite generating a number of quality scoring chances and hitting the post in each half, William & Mary women's soccer settled for a scoreless draw with American on Sunday afternoon at Martin Family Stadium.
The Tribe (2-3-1) outshot the visiting Eagles, 11-6, including a 4-2 cushion in chances on goal. W&M generated five corner kicks compared to three for American (1-1-3).
Each team hit the woodwork in the opening 45 minutes. In the 19th minute, junior
Elaina Longjohn's shot from 10 yards out on the right side hit off the crossbar. Eight minutes later, American's Fisayo Iluyomade hit the right post on a sliding attempted from distance.
Freshman
Ivey Crain just missed giving the Tribe the lead in the 30th minute. Longjohn drove to the endline and sent a low cross to Crain, but American's Julia Kato got a hand Crain's shot and pushed it just wide of the frame.
The Tribe turned the pressure up in the second half, outshooting American, 9-2, but could not find a goal.
W&M had four shots in the 80th minute, including a pair on goal. The first attempt of the sequence came off the foot of Longjohn, but her low-lining shot from just outside the 18 was blocked on a diving save by Kato. After two blocked shots, the ball fell to the foot of sophomore Marissa McClure. The Tribe striker's shot to the center of the goal was cleared off the line by an American defender.
In the final minute, freshman
Madison Moon intercepted a pass and laid the ball off to senior
Kayleigh Shackford at the top of the box. Shackford's chance from distance hit the crossbar and bounced out.
Senior goalkeeper
Zoe Doughty recorded two saves to record her third shutout of the season. Longjohn topped the Tribe with five shots, while Crain and Shackford each had two.
