WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – Junior
Elaina Longjohn scored the match's lone goal in the first half and the Tribe defense was strong in a 1-0 shutout victory over Old Dominion on Thursday night at Martin Family Stadium.
The win was the first for William & Mary (1-2) over the Monarchs since 2016 and marked the Tribe's second game this season against an NCAA Tournament team from last season. ODU (0-2) was coming off a narrow 1-0 loss at SEC foe Auburn, which also played in the NCAA Tournament a season ago. The Monarchs, who joined the Sun Belt Conference in July, won Conference USA last season to earn their NCAA Tourney berth.
On the goal, Longjohn made a nice run toward the penalty area and senior
Kenna Zier found her with a threading pass. The junior forward touch just inside the top of the 18 and finished inside the far post past a rushing Erin Jones in the 30th minute.
It was Longjohn's second career goal and first career game-winner, while Zier notched her second assist of the season. Classmate
Kayleigh Shackford also recorded an assist on the play finding Zier in the midfield, her team-leading third helper this year.
Old Dominion outshot the Tribe, 18-6, but the Green and Gold defense made the first-half goal stand up. Reigning CAA Goalkeeper of the Year
Zoe Doughty registered seven saves in recording her first shutout of the season and sixth of her Tribe career.
The Tribe back line of graduate student
Addie Puskar, juniors
Nicole Sellers and
Ginny Delacruz, sophomore
Emma D'Alesandro and redshirt freshman
Maddie Walker came up big in helping the home side record the clean sheet.
