WASHINGTON, D.C. – On a humid and wet afternoon, William & Mary women's soccer suffered a narrow 1-0 setback at George Washington on Sunday.
The Colonials provided the game's only scoring in the 19th minute. Rachel Sorkenn scored on a rebound following up an initial shot from Lauren Prentice that was blocked by Tribe goalkeeper
Zoe Doughty.
Freshman
Ivey Crain had the best scoring opportunities of the game for the Green and Gold. In the opening half, Crain made a nice move inside the right side of the penalty to gain space, but her shot to the near post was blocked by GW GK Grace Crowe in the 34th minute.
Crain had a couple of break chances in the final five minutes of the game. Junior
Elaina Longjohn raced through midfield, sending a nicely weighted ball to Crain inside the 18. The rookie striker's shot from an angle went just wide of the left post.
A minute later, another through ball set Crain free into the box, but Crowe came off her line to get a piece of the ball and thwart the opportunity.
George Washington outshot W&M, 8-6, with both teams putting three shots on goal. The Colonials also had six corner kicks compared to three for the Tribe.
