ELON, N.C.- William & Mary found itself on the wrong side of a pitching duel Wednesday afternoon, dropping the opening game of the CAA Tournament 3-2 to Northeastern in Elon, N.C.
Zach Tsakounis,
Tom Mayer, and
Nate Knowles combined to scatter just four hits and strike out eight to just two walks, but the Tribe could not find offense at the opportune moments.
Tsakounis allowed one earned on two hits over 3.0 innings of work. Mayer took the loss, allowing two runs and struck out five over 4.0 innings and Knowles did not allow a base runner over the final two frames of the game. Mayer and Knowles combined to retire the final 18 Huskies in order.
Tribe starter Tsakounis made quick work of the Huskies allowing zero hits over the first two innings. William & Mary would get on the board first with a pair of runs in the bottom of the second.
David Hogarth led off the frame beating out an infield single. Hogarth would later score on a double down the left field line off the bat of
Joe Delossantos. Delossantos would then swipe third, sneaking his left hand in just ahead of the throw and score on an RBI groundout from
Tyler Solomon.
Northeastern would take advantage of a walk and a pair of hits to plate a run in the third. In the top of the fourth, Danny Crossen shot a two-run homer to deep left center to give the Huskies a 3-2 edge.
The Tribe would threaten again in the seventh as Hogarth would once again start the inning with a single, but a diving catch by the Northeastern right fielder would put an end to the rally attempt.
William & Mary will be back in action tomorrow morning for an 11:00 a.m. first pitch. The Tribe will face off against the loser of third-seeded Hofstra and host Elon in an elimination game.
