ELON, N.C.- Late homers from
Cole Ragone and
Joe Delossantos were not enough as William & Mary was bested 6-3 by Elon in an elimination game at the CAA Tournament on Thursday. The Tribe finishes the 2022 season with a 26-23 record in year one under
Mike McRae.
Ragone hit his team-leading 10th homer of the season, a two run blast in the seventh inning. In the eighth, Delossantos hammered his ninth long ball of the year, a solo shot.
A two-base error on the first pitch of the ballgame would bite the Tribe as Elon plated an unearned run in the first.
Casey Green shut down the Phoenix in the second, but with two outs in the third and a man on first, Luke Stephenson homered to put Elon up 3-0.
The Tribe pitching would down Elon quietly in the fourth and fifth innings, but the Phoenix struck again in the sixth with a solo home run off the bat of Cole Reynolds. Elon played small ball to get the fifth run of the game in the seventh, utilizing a hit, sac bunt, and wild pitch to make it 5-0.
The William & Mary bats came alive in the seventh as
Jack Cone led off the inning with a double off the wall in right field, moments after robbing Elon of a home run in center. With Cone on second, Ragone launched a 1-1 breaking ball over the wall in left.
Reynolds would hit his second homer of the game in the eight to extend Elon's lead. In the bottom half, Delossantos smoked a first-pitch fastball over the wall in left to once again cut the Phoenix lead to three.
Matt Howat entered the game in the ninth, making his 20th appearance of the season and retired Elon but the Tribe could not get anything going in the ninth as the Phoenix took the 6-3 decision.
