Late Homers And Pitching Boost Tribe to 5-2 Win

WILLIAMSBURG, VA.- Strong pitching and a trio of late homers propelled William & Mary to a 5-2 win over Delaware Saturday afternoon at Plumeri Park. Three pitchers limited the Blue Hens to just four hits in a dominating performance while Joe Delossantos, Max Winters, and Ben Williamson all went deep late in the game.

With the win, the Tribe is back over .500 with a 22-21 overall mark and a 10-10 record in league play. The team has a chance to clinch a spot in the CAA tournament with a win tomorrow.

Tribe starter Casey Green tossed 2.2 innings of scoreless baseball allowing just two hits. Matt Howat worked a spectacular 3.1 innings in relief. The junior struck out three and his only base runner reached via an error, earning his fourth win of the year. Carter Lovasz tossed the last three innings to collect his fourth save on the season.

The teams traded scoreless frames for the first three innings before the Tribe broke through by manufacturing a run in the fourth. Cole Ragone led off the inning with a walk and moved to second on a David Hogarth bunt. After advancing on a wild pitch, Ragone scored on a Delossantos single.

The Blue Hens would keep the Tribe offense in check before William & Mary played long ball a couple of times in the seventh. Hogarth singled up the middle to begin the inning before Delossantos launched a 3-2 pitch over the scoreboard in left for his eighth homer of the season. Moments later Winters crushed a 2-1 ball just inside the foul pole in left to make it 4-0 Tribe.

Delaware finally got to the Tribe's pitching staff in the top of the eighth as Joey Loynd lifted a two-run homer cutting the William & Mary lead in half. The runs ended a streak of 31 straight innings in which the opposition did not score against the Tribe pitching staff.

The Tribe wasted no time answering the Hens two-run eighth as Williamson smoked the opening pitch of the bottom half over the 370 sign in left center for a solo shot. Lovasz worked a one, two, three ninth inning to secure the 5-2 win.

William & Mary will look to complete the sweep of Delaware tomorrow afternoon in the team's final home game of 2022.
