NEWARK, Del. – The William & Mary lacrosse team was edged at Delaware, 13-11, on Saturday afternoon.
W&M (4-9, 0-3) owned a 6-5 advantage at halftime, but UD (4-9, 1-2) scored the first six goals following intermission to build an 11-6 lead early in the fourth quarter.
The Tribe answered with a 3-0 run to narrow the gap to just two goals but was unable to get any closer than the final margin.
Tribe Standouts
Senior
Grace Ahonen (3g) and freshman
Serena Jacobs (3g) both posted hat tricks, while senior
Belle Martire totaled a team-high four points (2g, 2a). Jacobs also added three caused turnovers and three ground balls, while Martire recorded two caused turnovers and a pair of ground balls to go with her four-point performance.
Senior
Lauren Russell also provided offensive production with a pair of goals.
Defensively, W&M was led by junior
Caroline Donovan (2 CT, 6 GB - career high), sophomore
Kathleen Cozzi (2 CT, 4 GB), senior
Caroline Jordan (2 CT, 2 GB) and sophomore
Courtney Vasquenza (2 CT, 2 GB).
Inside the Numbers
Both teams recorded 32 shots, while W&M held a narrow edge in attempts on goal (23-21).
UD owned a 22-6 advantage in draw controls, while W&M posted 10 more ground balls (30-20) and committed nine fewer turnovers (19-28).
The Opposition
Danika Swech led the Blue Hens with six points (4g, 2a), while Lizzie Hsu (3g) and sophomore Danielle Livornese (2g) also found the back of the cage multiple times. Livornese added a game-high nine draw controls.
Goalie Mercy McCarthy recorded 12 saves with a .522 save percentage.
Notes
Jacobs' hat trick was her fourth of the season, while Ahonen recorded her second three-goal effort of the 2022 campaign … Martire moved into sole possession of sixth place on W&M's all-time points list (181) and needs just three more to pass Colleen Dalon (183) for fifth.
