WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – The William & Mary lacrosse team fell to No. 11 James Madison, 21-9, at Martin Family Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
Although the contest was knotted at 5-5 midway through the opening quarter, JMU (11-4, 4-0) utilized an 8-1 run to build a 13-6 lead at halftime.
W&M (4-10, 0-4) struck first following intermission with a goal by
Lauren Russell off an assist from
Serena Jacobs, but the Dukes scored seven of the next eight goals to secure the conference victory.
Tribe Standouts
Russell led W&M with four points (3g, 1a), while
Sarah Cipolla also found the back of the cage twice and totaled a team-high seven draw controls to go with a pair of ground balls. Jacobs added a pair of points (1g, 1a).
Caroline Hertzberg and
Ainsley Huizenga also came up big with three draw controls apiece.
Inside the Numbers
JMU outshot W&M, 43-27, which included a 30-15 margin on goal.
The Dukes also owned advantages in draw controls (21-13) and ground balls (24-16), while they committed two fewer turnovers (15-17).
The Opposition
Katie Checkosky led the Dukes with six points (1g, 5a), while Kacey Knobloch totaled five points (3g, 1a).
Tai Jankowski (3g, 1a), Taylor Marchetti (3g, 1a) and Katelyn Morgan (2g, 2a) also contributed offensively with four points apiece.
Isabella Peterson (2g, 1a) posted a game-high eight draw controls.
Notes
Russell's hat trick was her fifth of the season … Hertzberg's 52 draw controls this spring ranks tied for fourth on W&M's single-season list, while Cipolla's 51 DC ranks seventh.
