WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – The William & Mary lacrosse team concluded its home slate with an 18-11 setback against Hofstra at Martin Family Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
W&M (4-11, 0-5) owned a 6-2 lead after the first quarter, but Hofstra (8-7, 2-3) knotted the game at 8-8 by halftime.
Although W&M scored the opening goal of the third frame, the Pride answered with a 4-0 run to build a 12-9 advantage. The Tribe narrowed the margin to just two goals on multiple occasions, but Hofstra outscored W&M 5-0 during the final quarter to secure the conference victory.
Tribe Standouts
Freshman
Serena Jacobs led the Tribe with four goals, while senior
Lauren Russell (2g, 1a) and junior
Sarah Cipolla (2g, 1a) added three points apiece. Cipolla also recorded a team-best five draw controls, equaling the total posted by sophomore
Caroline Hertzberg.
Sophomore
Courtney Vasquenza came up big defensively with two caused turnovers and a career-high seven ground balls, while junior
Caroline Donovan also caused a pair of turnovers with two ground balls.
Freshman goalie
Elise Palmer posted 10 saves.
Inside the Numbers
Hofstra outshot the Tribe, 33-31, which included a 28-21 margin in shots on goal.
W&M owned an edge in draw controls, 17-16, while Hofstra held a narrow margin in ground balls, 21-19.
The Pride committed two fewer turnovers than the Tribe, 15-17.
The Opposition
Jackie Gatti (2g, 4a) led Hofstra with six points, while Lauren Coletti (4g) and Kate Fiola (3g, 1a) totaled four points apiece.
Shannon Boyle and Katie Whelan led the Pride with five and four draw controls, respectively, while Ashlyn McDonald and Caitlin Murphy tallied three caused turnovers apiece.
Goalie Jess Smith registered 10 saves and a .476 save percentage.
Notes
Jacobs' hat trick was her fifth of the season … Hertzberg's 57 draw controls this spring ranks tied for second on W&M's single-season list, while Cipolla's 56 DC ranks fourth … With 17 draw controls against Hofstra, W&M now has 214 this season – a figure that ranks eighth on the program's single-season list.
