Lax Falls at Towson in Season Finale

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – The William & Mary lacrosse team concluded its season with a 12-5 setback at Towson on Wednesday evening.
 
Towson (7-7, 4-1) opened the contest by tallying the first six goals before W&M (4-12, 0-6) got on the scoreboard when freshman Serena Jacobs found the back of the cage with 6:36 remaining in the second quarter.
 
The Tigers responded, however, and gradually extended the margin to as many as nine, 12-3, midway through the fourth quarter en route to securing the conference victory.
 
Tribe Standouts
In addition to Jacobs, senior Olivia Naughton, sophomore Ellie Shea, freshman Justyce Barber and freshman Sophia Chiodo Ortiz all recorded goals for the Tribe. In addition to posting her first career goal, Naughton's stat line included three ground balls and a pair of caused turnovers in her final collegiate game.
 
Senior Grace Ahonen totaled a team-high three caused turnovers, while sophomore Courtney Vasquenza posted four ground balls and two caused turnovers.
 
Freshman goalie Elise Palmer registered 10 saves and a career-high six ground balls.
 
Inside the Numbers
Towson outshot the Tribe, 32-23, which included a 22-16 margin in shots on goal.
 
The Tigers also owned advantages in draw controls (16-5) and ground balls (30-26), while they committed two fewer turnovers (23-25).  

The Opposition
Blair Pearre led Towson with three goals, four ground balls and five draw controls, while Kerri Thornton, Gabby Garrett and Halley Koras all totaled two goals apiece. Shannon Sullivan added four draw controls and five ground balls.
 
Erin Williams led Towson defensively with three caused turnovers and five ground balls, while goalie Carly Merlo totaled 10 saves and a .769 save percentage.  
 
Notes
Sophomore Caroline Hertzberg finished the year with a team-high 59 draw controls, which ranks second on W&M's single-season list … Junior Sarah Cipolla's 57 draw controls ranks tied for third, while her 4.07 draw controls per game ranks second … Palmer finished her rookie season with 167 saves, which ranks seventh on W&M's single-season list … Her 10.44 saves per game ranks sixth … As a team, W&M's 219 draw controls rank seventh on the program's single-season list, while its 251 points ranks 10th.
