Thomas' Homer, Solid Pen Boosts Tribe

BOSTON, MASS. - With the score tied 3-3 and a pair of outs in the top of the ninth, Tribe senior Matt Thomas stepped to the plate with and smashed a 2-1 pitch over the fence in left field for his CAA- leading seventh homer of the season. Randy Prosperi earned the save combining with Mike Weidinger to get the final three outs as William & Mary defeated Northeastern for the second straight day, this time by a final of 4-3.

The victory assured the Tribe a second CAA series win in as many tries as William & Mary bested UNCW in two of three last weekend.

Weidinger earned the win, his second of the season working 1.1 scoreless innings. Prosperi took home his first save of the season, coming on with two men on and one out in the ninth. The senior would get help as Joe Delossantos made a leaping play in left for the second out of the inning and a lazy fly out to Thomas would end the game. Casey Green started and allowed two runs on five hits over 4.0 innings, and Jacob Haney was suburb giving up zero earned over 3.0 innings, striking out three and walking zero men.

The teams traded blows early as Northeastern took a one run lead on a pair of hits in the first inning. The Tribe answered in the second as Delossantos singled and scored on a Ben Williamson double. Williamson would come around on Thomas' first big hit of the day to give the Tribe a 2-1 edge.

In the home half, the Huskies got the run back once again on a pair of hits to tie the game. The tie would last just a frame as Mark Trotta went deep on the first pitch of the fourth inning, smashing his second homer of the year and giving William & Mary a one-run edge. Once again, Northeastern answered, scoring an unearned run in the fifth.

Haney and Weidinger would hold the Huskies at  bay over the next three frames, before Thomas' bomb broke the tie and eventually gave the Green and Gold the game and series win. Haney, Weidinger, and Prosperi combined to go five innings, scattering just three hits in the game.

Up Next: The Tribe will go for the sweep tomorrow as they face Northeastern for a noon start time.
