Bats Slip Up In Midweek Loss

WILLIAMSBURG, VA. - William & Mary baseball fell to Old Dominion 5-1 Tuesday evening at Plumeri Park. Jack Cone doubled and scored in the ninth inning, but the damage had been done as ODU's Matt Coutney hit a pair of homers for the Monarchs.

Zach Tsakounis was solid on the hill striking out four over 4.0 innings and allowing just three hits. Mike Weidinger was phenomenal in relief facing just six men to record six outs over two innings of work. The lefty allowed one walk, zero hits, and had a strikeout. Tom Mayer came on in the seventh and worked a pair of innings allowing one earned with three strikeouts.

Both starting pitchers would cruise early and the Tribe threatened a two-out rally in the third after free passes to Ben Williamson and Matt Thomas, but a nice defensive play from Old Dominion would keep the score 0-0.

The Monarchs would finally get to Tsakounis in the fourth as Matt Coutney hit his 17th homer of the season. The ODU first baseman's two-run home run placed him second in the NCAA in round-trippers and made it a 2-0 game.

ODU struck again taking advantage of an error and a pair of infield hits in the seventh inning to load the bases with no outs. Tom Mayer would get a 4-6-3 double play to retire a pair, but the Monarchs plated a run on the play. Another tough-luck infield single off the bat of the next man would score another to make it 4-0 ODU.

In the top half of the eighth, Coutney would lead off with his 18th homer of the season, tying him for first in the NCAA. Nate Knowles would get a pair of strikeouts in a clean ninth inning.

In the bottom half, Lucas Carmichael would draw a one-out walk and Jack Cone would follow with a laser off the wall in right field to give the Tribe runners at second and third. Carmichael would be cut down at the plate on a fielder's choice, but Cone would score moments later on a wild pitch to make it 5-1. The Tribe would get men on first and third but be unable to push anymore runs across.
