Women's Tennis Wins Third Straight, Downing Richmond, 6-1

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – William & Mary women's tennis extended its win streak to three with a convincing 6-1 win over in-state foe Richmond on Saturday afternoon at the Mackesy Tennis Center at the Millie West Courts.

The Tribe (9-8) dominated doubles, dropping just three games between all three positions, before winning five of the six singles tilts to down the Spiders (7-10).

W&M switched up its doubles lineup with great success as its No. 2 and No. 3 teams won their first dual-matches together by 6-1 scores. Senior Mila Saric and freshman Emma Fernald rolled past Carly Cohen and Marta Buendia at No. 2 to improve to 3-1 on the year. The rookie pairing of Hedda Gurholt and Ine Stange clinched the point with a victory over Emily Garvin and Helene Heiberg on line three.

Stange and junior Elisa Van Meeteren wasted little time extending the Tribe advantage to 3-0. Stange dropped just two games in a 6-1, 6-1 win over Emily Garvin at No. 6. It was her 12th win of the year as she improved to 3-1 on line six. At No. 4, Van Meeteren won her third-straight match and 10th overall on the season, dispatching Sara Salemyr, 6-3, 6-3.

Saric, who is ranked No. 109 nationally, clinched the Tribe victory with a come-from-behind three-set win over Emily Dunbar at the top spot. After dropping the opening set, 6-2, the Tribe senior roared back with 6-4, 6-2 victories in the final two sets to claim her fifth-straight victory. It marked Saric's fourth comeback three-set win in her last five victories as she improved to 23-5 overall and 13-3 at No. 1.

Fernald and Gurholt rounded out the Tribe triumph with wins at No. 5 and No. 2, respectively. Fernald improved to 3-1 since moving up to line five, downing Marta Buendia in a pair of tiebreaker sets, 7-6 (1), 7-6 (5). She upped her mark to 17-9 overall.

Gurholt needed a third-set super tiebreak, but picked up her third win in a row over Carly Cohen at No. 2. After the players split tiebreakers in the first two sets, the Tribe rookie won convincingly in the third-set super breaker, 10-2. She ran her season record to 21-9.

Up Next: The Tribe wraps up the regular season on Saturday, April 23, when its hosts Elon for Senior Day. The match carries noon start time at the Mackesy Tennis Center at the Millie West Court. W&M will honor the senior duo of Mila Saric and Lisa Fukutoku.
