Women's Tennis Celebrates Senior Day with Win over Elon

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – William & Mary women's tennis celebrated Senior Day and wrapped up the regular season with a 5-2 win over Colonial Athletic Association foe Elon on Saturday afternoon at the Mackesy Tennis Center at the Millie West Courts.
 
Prior to the match, the Green and Gold (10-8) honored the senior duo of Mila Saric and Lisa Fukutoku who were taking part in their final regular season match for the Tribe.
 
W&M's new-look doubles lineup once again worked to perfection as the home team rolled to take a 1-0 lead. Saric and freshman Emma Fernald won in convincing 6-2 fashion at No. 2 over Olivia Archer and Victoria Saldh, before the freshman pair of Hedda Gurholt and Ine Stange clinched the point with a matching 6-2 win over Alison O'Dea and Sarah Allen on line three.
 
In singles, junior Raffaela Alhach (No. 3), Fernald (No. 5) and Stange (No. 6) earned straight-set wins to clinched the Tribe's fifth CAA win of the year.
 
Fernald won her third-straight match and improved to 4-1 on line five, making quick work of Shauna Galvin, 6-1, 6-2. The Tribe rookie ran her singles mark to 18-9 overall.
 
Alhach followed to extend to the Tribe to 3-0 with her 16th triumph of the year. She dispatched O'Dean, 6-4, 6-2, tallying her ninth dual-match victory of the season.
 
Stange clinched the Tribe win with a 6-4, 6-1 win over Allen at the No. 6 spot. It marked her third-straight win as she improved to 13-8 overall and 4-1 on line six.
 
Saric celebrated the final home match of her career with a come-from-behind three-set win at No. 1. After dropping the first set to Sibel Tanik, the Tribe senior rallied with a 7-5 win in the second. She trailed 8-5 in the third-set super tiebreaker and fought off one match point, before winning the final two points of the breaker to claim a 12-10 victory. Saric, who is ranked No. 116 nationally, won her sixth in a row and upped her season ledger to 24-5. Over her career, she has been dominant against CAA competition, amassing a 20-2 record over her four seasons.
 
Up Next: The Tribe travels to Elon for the 2022 CAA Championship, April 28-May 1, at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center. W&M is likely to earn a high seed in the league championship and those seedings will be released on Monday.
