NORFOLK, Va. – It's become a common occurrence when William & Mary and Old Dominion square off on the tennis courts – a back-and-forth, close match-up.
On Saturday afternoon, the contest between rivals came down to a quartet of three-set singles matches with the No. 64-ranked Monarchs, squeaking out a 4-2 victory at the Folkes-Stevens Tennis Center. It marked the 11th time in the last 16 meetings that a W&M-ODU tilt was decided by a 4-2 or 4-3 scoreline.
After ODU (13-8) took the doubles point, graduate student
Sebastian Quiros pulled the Tribe even with a win at No. 3. He dropped just three games in rolling past Yevhen Sirous, 6-3, 6-0. Quiros improved to 14-8 overall with his 10th dual-match victory.
The Monarchs answered with a close straight-set win at No. 1 to take a 2-1 lead, but the Tribe (10-7) rallied to force third sets at No. 2, No. 4, No. 5 and No. 6.
Graduate student
Harrison Brown picked up a second Tribe singles win, rallying past Younes Lalami at No. 2. After dropping the first set, 6-4, Brown bounced back for his third-straight win with 6-1, 6-3 wins in the final two sets. He ran his mark to 18-5 overall and 11-4 in dual-match competition.
ODU secure the team triumph with three-set wins at No. 4 and No. 6.
Up Next: The Tribe heads to Elon to take part in the CAA Championship, April 22-24.
