WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – The William & Mary lacrosse team earned its second consecutive lopsided victory with a 19-10 win against Longwood on a rainy Wednesday afternoon at Martin Family Stadium.
Although W&M (4-5) led by just two, 4-2, after the opening quarter, it scored the first seven goals of the second frame to build a comfortable 11-2 advantage.
While Longwood (3-5) answered by scoring the next four goals to narrow the margin to 11-6 early in the third quarter, the Tribe responded with a 5-0 run to help seal the non-conference victory.
Tribe Standouts
Freshman
Serena Jacobs (5g, 1a) and senior
Belle Martire (4g, 2a) led the Tribe offensively with six points apiece, while senior
Lauren Russell (3g, 2a) and junior
Sarah Cipolla (3g) also recorded hat tricks and scored on all three of their shot attempts. Cipolla added a game-high eight draw controls.
Sophomore
Caroline Hertzberg posted an outstanding all-around performance with career highs in caused turnovers (5) and ground balls (5) to go with four draw controls.
Inside the Numbers
W&M outshot the Lancers, 36-17, which included a 25-14 margin in shots on goal.
The Tribe also owned advantages in draw controls (19-13) and ground balls (27-17), while it committed six fewer turnovers (17-23).
The Opposition
Claire Libby led Longwood with five goals – all of which she scored in the final 30 minutes after playing the opening half in goal.
Haley Moomau (2g, 1a) and Lauren Cerretani (2) also found the back of the cage multiple times, while Ainsley Rowlison posted two assists and a team-high five draw controls.

W&M improves to 20-2 all-time against Longwood and now owns a 25-4 mark versus teams currently in the Big South … The Tribe is averaging 19.5 goals per game and has posted a .542 shooting percentage during its last two contests … Martire's performance marked her third consecutive hat trick and her sixth of the season … Cipolla is averaging 6.7 draw controls per game during the last three contests.
