BUIES CREEK, N.C. – The William & Mary lacrosse team earned a convincing 20-15 victory at Campbell on Saturday afternoon.
After jumping out to an early lead with a 5-0 run in the opening quarter, W&M (3-5) put the game out of reach by scoring the first four goals of the third stanza to build a 15-7 advantage.
Campbell (3-3) closed the contest with a 5-2 run but was unable to get any closer than the final margin.
Tribe Standouts
Senior
Belle Martire led the Tribe with nine points (3g, 6a), while freshman
Sam Van Gieson posted six points (5g, 1a). Martire's six assists equaled a single-game school record, while her nine points ranks tied for third.
Senior
Lauren Russell also came up big with four goals on five shots with four ground balls, while freshman
Ainsley Huizenga recorded four points (2g, 2a).
Sophomore
Caroline Hertzberg's career-high nine draw controls tied for the third-best total in school history, while freshman goalie
Elise Palmer's career-best 19 saves also ranks tied for third at W&M.
Inside the Numbers
Although Campbell outshot W&M (47-36), including a 34-31 margin on goal, the Tribe posted a .555 shooting percentage.
W&M owned a 28-23 advantage in ground balls and committed three fewer turnovers (18-21), while CU held a 23-16 margin in draw controls.
The Opposition
Megan Matthews led Campbell with five points (2g, 3a), while Ally Heath finished with four points (3g, 1a). Juliana Sanchez tallied a game-high 14 draw controls to go with three points (2g, 1a).
Notes
W&M's 20 goals were a season high … Martire moved into third on W&M's career goals list (136) and tied for seventh in points (163) … With the win, W&M improves to 2-0 all-time versus Campbell and 24-4 all-time against teams currently in the Big South.
