WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – It was a day of comebacks for the No. 72-ranked Tribe on Sunday afternoon. Senior
Daniel Pellerito capped the Green and Gold's come-from-behind victory with a rally of his own in lifting W&M (9-4) to its sixth-straight win, 4-3, over UAB.
With the match even at three, Pellerito found himself down 4-1 in the third set against Nikola Puric. The Tribe senior battled his way back, winning the set's final five games to cap the Tribe comeback and kicked off a Green and Gold celebration. Pellerito improved to 8-4 on the year with the win on line six.
After the Tribe dropped the doubles point for just the second time in 10 matches, the visiting Blazers (6-10) pushed their lead to 2-0 with a singles win at No. 4. Playing without two of its usual top-four singles players due to injury, the Tribe faced an uphill battle.
Playing up at the No. 5 spot for the first time in his career, freshman
Sean Joseph got the Tribe on the board and provided a huge lift. The Green and Gold rookie dropped just one game in each set, bouncing Martin Vasquez, 6-1, 6-1. Joseph evened his singles mark at 4-4.
Senior
Joseph Brailovsky pulled the Tribe even at two with a convincing win at No. 3. He topped Vojtech Podzemny, 6-1, 6-3, for his sixth-straight victory. Brailovsky improved to 12-6 overall and 8-3 in dual-match action.
After a win at No. 1 briefly put the Blazers back in front, graduate student
Sebastian Quiros responded for the Tribe and set the stage for Pellerito. Quiros won its straight sets at No. 2 over Thanos Spyropoulos, 6-2, 7-6 (4), for his third victory in a row. He improved to 12-6 on the year and remained undefeated on line two at 3-0.
In doubles, junior
George Davis and graduate student
Harrison Brown won easily at the top spot, dropping Michal Lusovsky and Podzemny, 6-1. The duo won their fifth in a row and improved to 14-5 on the year. The Blazers though took the doubles point with a tiebreaker win at No. 2.
Up Next: The Tribe returns to action on Sunday with a nationally-ranked tilt against No. 49 Penn. The contest is slated for a 10 a.m. start time from the Mackesy Tennis Center at the Millie West Courts.
