Women's Tennis Dominates No. 72 UNCW in CAA Opening Win

WILMINGTON, N.C. – William & Mary women's tennis won its second in a row, dominating Colonial Athletic Association counterpart No. 72-ranked UNCW, 6-1, on Thursday afternoon.

The Green and Gold (5-6, 1-0 CAA) won at the top two doubles positions and tallied five of six singles matches in straight sets to upend the Seahawks (8-3, 0-1 CAA), who were coming off a 4-3 win over Big Ten foe Penn State on Sunday.

Just like Wednesday, W&M posted wins at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles to claim the initial point of the match. Senior Mila Saric and freshman Hedda Gurholt notched a 6-3 win over Sasha Belaya and Lauren Gish at the top spot, while juniors Elisa Van Meeteren and Raffaela Alhach upended Zoe Huffman and  Stela Joksimovic, 6-4, to clinch the point. Both Tribe pairs improved to 6-4 on the year.

Freshmen Emma Fernald (No. 6) and Ine Stange (No. 5) both won with ease at the bottom two singles spots to extend the Tribe lead to 3-0. Fernald won for the second time in as many days, downing Anna Daniels, 6-1, 6-2, to improve to 12-8 on the year. Stange won her eighth match of the season, dropping just four games in a triumph over Joksimovic.

After a UNCW win at No. 3, Gurholt clinched the Tribe victory with a straight-set win on line two. She topped Huffman, 6-2, 6-3, for her 17th win of the year. Gurholt won her second in row and improved to 8-3 in dual-match play.

Saric and Alhach rounded out the Tribe victory with wins at No. 1 and No. 4, respectively. Saric won her fourth in a row, upending Belaya, 6-4, 6-4, while Alhach downed Gish, 7-5, 6-4. Saric ran her team-best singles ledger to 18-4 overall and 8-2 in dual-match play. Alhach won her 12th match of the year and evened her season ledger at 5-5.
